It’s not only at Christmas time that we see the importance of the birth of our Savior! All year, each day, with each resident of our maternity home we see miracles and love that we would not see if we and our residents did not have faith in Jesus.
Recently we saw the Lord really move on the behalf of one of our residents. The work week started for her with what appeared to be a looming disaster. She was new to the doctor's office, just freshly out of weeks of training for a job that we all knew the Lord had provided her. She found herself thrust into a new environment, where even though she was well equipped to do the position she had been hired for, she was unsure of the procedures specific to that particular office.
As she went about her day she asked these procedural questions of her co-workers, only to receive rash, short answers, or was ignored all together. She was also summoned into the manager's office having been accused by these same co-workers of breaking a rule on a previous shift.
Our resident was devastated!
She was being accused of something she had not done by co-workers who appeared to be out to get her dismissed from the position that she knew the Lord had given her. Tears welled up and flowed down her cheeks as she maintained her innocence to the accusation and expressed her need to keep her position at the office in order to provide for her and the baby she was carrying. The manager reminded her she was within her 90 day probation and to make sure that it did not happen again.
Heartbroken, the resident made the long trip home from Orlando back to what she described as
"her safe place... the place where she knew she would find listening ears and comfort."
We listened as she told us of the day she had, offering to pray for her and encouraging her to go back tomorrow and do the best she could do and treat the other staff the same way she would want them to treat her. During nightly prayer, the resident prayed, giving the situation over to the Lord.
By the next day, she began to see that something had started to change. The co-workers that had been adversarial just the day before were more apt to talk and work with her. The doctor that she worked for took a personal interest in her, asking her where she was from, and about her life here in Florida. As the week progressed, even the manager came asking her to draw from previous hospital experience and share anything that might benefit their current situation at the practice.
So what happened? Why the big change seemingly overnight? The answer came in that night's devotion. The Scripture was Romans 12:18-19. “If it be possible, as much as is in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but give place unto wrath: For it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay,” saith the Lord.” The resident had done exactly what the Scripture said to do. Instead of trying to avenge herself for the ill treatment and false accusations of her co-workers, she turned the situation over to the Lord and HE STOOD UP FOR HER! He changed their hearts! What a testimony and a good lesson for all of us.
Our residents come to us heartbroken, accused, devastated, but they come to this safe place and leave changed with peace because we and their Savior have stood up for them!
